Conditional Sentences

Hi!

Bom, hoje estudaremos as Conditional Sentences, ou, como o próprio nome diz, Sentenças Condicionais. Creio que você já deve saber que uma sentença condicional é formada pela conjunção "se", que no Inglês seria o "if". As Conditional Sentences são formadas por uma oração principal e uma oração subordinada, unidas por "if" ou outra conjunção. Essas sentenças expressam fatos com um resultado provável no futuro, fatos com resultados improváveis ou impossíveis no presente ou futuro, para dar conselhos...

Veja alguns exemplos:

Resultados Improváveis no Futuro:

I'll talk to him if I see him.

(Eu falarei com ele se eu o ver.)

Perceba que o verbo "Ver" é conjugado no presente ("if I see" e não "if I to see").

You'll not learn about Goelogy if you don't study.

(Você não aprenderá sobre Geologia se você não estudar.)

What will you do if it snows tomorrow?

(O que você fará se nevar amanhã?)

Como o verbo principal está no presente, conjugamos os verbos para He, She e It, e acrescentamos s no final do verbo.

Resumindo:

Usamos if + Simple Present ... Future will

No lugar de "will", podemos usar os Modal Verbs Can, May, Should, Have to, Might, Must...

You may/ can have a soda if you want to.

(Você pode beber refrigerante se você quiser.)

If there is storm, the flights may/ might be canceled.

(Se houver tempestade, os voos poderão ser cancelados.)

If you see a thief, you have to/ should/ must call the police.

(Se você ver um ladrão, você tem que/ deveria/ deve chamar a polícia)

Quando o resultado for imediato ou habitual, usamos:

if + Simple Present ... Simple Present

If you run so fast like them, you fall.

(Se você correr tão rápido quanto eles, você cai.)

Condições improváveis ou impossíveis no futuro ou presente:

If I had one bilion dollars, I would go to the moon.

(Se eu tivesse um bilhão de dólares, eu iria para a lua.)

O verbo principal fica no passado.

Michael wouldn't be so spoilt if he wasn't an only child.

(Michael não seria tão mimado se não fosse filho único.)

If I were you*, I would drink beer with the guys.

(Se eu fosse um homem, eu beberia cerveja com os rapazes.)

* Perceba que, para I, o verbo To Be no passado é was, mas usamos were quando falamos como na frase acima: "If I were you...". O you exerce influência sobre o I.

Would:

O Would é um modal verb, que indica o futuro de pretério do indicativo em português. Não tem tradução, mas, junto de um verbo no infinitivo, torna o verbo com a terminação -ria, como em "dançaria", "amaria"...

I would be beautiful...

I wouldn't be beautiful...

Would I be beautiful...?
